Such memories of grade 1 for me with the slate and slate pencil in a class of 42 children at Upper Mt Gravatt SS. I vividly remember my teacher, Miss Dale, scratching lines into my slate to assist writing in a straight line and inadvertently blowing the residual dust off into my wide open eyes. "School port", so much a Queensland term that friends in other States wonder what I'm talking about. Loved reading the book and reveling in having it recalled orally. Can't wait for the next episode, just like "Spies like Us" when it was serialised on ABC radio. You've made my day again, Hugh.

Pleased to hear you love 'The Great Fletch" and still "reveling in having it recalled orally".

That was my earnest hope when I set out to turn it into a series of podcasts. It's a bit different fro the book because I thought of thing I should have written; had learnt something else; and had to make each episode of a similar length with a beginning, middle and an end to keep the listener interested. Junction Park also had Preparatory School, Prep 1 through Prep 4, in two years, before Grade 1. And it was: "A like an apple, A says 'Ah'" Not all 'school', folk dancing, plaiting plastic to make a key ring attachment and other 'hands-on' projects. I don't recall any corporal punishment at that time. Later in the 'grade' school - that's a whole 'nuther story.

Keep 'em coming.....

Graham you have reminded me of my brother Jack who, in the Mater Hospital, learnt how to plait plastic into key ring attachments. We thought it was fantastic. That was when I learned there was a colour called “mastic” — it was one of the colours you could buy the plastic string in.
