Do you remember when you won prizes with bottle tops? You bought your soft drink, then took the cork out of the bottletop, and a playing card was revealed. It might be the Queen of Hearts. Or Jack of Spades. I cannot remember how you won ... Perhaps you needed to collect a poker hand. In any case, I spent a lot of time walking up to the corner store, buying a drink, then getting the refund on the empty glass bottle, and saving up to buy another, looking for the King of Diamonds under the cork in the next bottletop. I never won the prize. But the dentist did well out of it all.

No real memories of commercial soft drinks, but hommade ginger beer, and corks being blown out of bottles. Main memory, feeding the brew with sugar and yeast. Dentist - chap named Rob Wright, had his office in the Valley. Ether and I didn't get along too well at all.

Although ether is very dangerous, we three kids would have loved it. My parents could not afford to pay for it, so Dr Rippingale would be pumping the drill and we'd be crying as he filled out teeth with those silver looking fillings which then hurt if they were accidentally touched with the aluminium foil around the chocolates.

Yes AH going to the Dentist was very very painful in the '60s with those slow old drills and no injections. I remember the pain when it hit a nerve very well. Too well.

AH! Home-made ginger beet. My mother and her sister Vera made some at the Police station in Esk where Uncle bill was the sergeat -- and stored them in an old jail cell. Then they started exploding -- and my father Fred and Bill crept up to get a bottle holding a large wet chaff bag in front of them for protection.

Your Dentist should have tired Nitrous Oxide (laughing gag) -- though I didn't like it wasn wouldn't have it again.

Not only the dentist AH, but also the soft drink maker! That game was a bigt like those scratch-its now -- where you keep spending your money trying to win a prize that might have already been won.
